Lines On Line
11 October 2003
The launch of Leeds 'Lines On Line' coincided with The Big Draw Yorkshire
launch.
In the Central Library, visitors recreated a Classical Greek frieze as an epic
life-size drawing, and joined hand painting and other drawing activities.
The Swarthmore Centre, Metropolitan University Gallery and Harewood House also
held Big Draw events on the same day.
Lines on Lines was a celebration of the possibilities of one of drawing's most
simple conventions - the simple line.
Using tiny drawings the size of a credit card, people throughout Leeds were
encouraged to draw what they saw, felt and imagined.
Information packs included specially printed cards for every participant to
fill in.

All 56 libraries in Leeds, the 4 major art
galleries, Leeds teaching hospitals, selected community and educational venues
took part.
The project lasted over two years and artists
worked in the different venues to develop projects that further raise the
awareness of drawing and in particular the potential of line and its uses.
Exhibitions of lines of drawings were held
throughout Leeds during the duration of the project and a website is planned.
All drawings will be scanned and joined digitally.
This will create an ever-growing virtual line that can be manipulated, viewed
and linked to educational activities and information about associated events.
